Research Assistant or Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Software Development/Humanities Computing

In support of a major multidisciplinary Arts and Humanities Research Council funded project Language and Linguistic Evidence in the 1641 Depositions, led by Dr. Barbara Fennell, we are seeking a Research Assistant or Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Software Development/Humanities Computing. You will work with the Principal Investigator (PI) and a team of other linguists, computer specialists and historians to further develop and analyze a digitized corpus of quasi-legal statements from witnesses to the 1641 rebellion in Ireland. Consulting with Humanities Computing experts in Dublin, the postholder will develop facility with IBM LanguageWare?, and will work with the PI and Early Modern
English Research Fellow to develop the ontologies needed to manipulate the digital corpus in order to be able to interrogate it about the nature of the language represented within it (for interpretation by historical linguists, dialect and text analysis specialists and cultural, political and social historians). The postholder will then proceed to help develop an interactive research site for use by linguists, historians and lay inquirers.

To be appointed as a Research Fellow you must hold a PhD in a relevant computer science discipline, or to be  appointed as a Research Assistant you must hold a Master’s degree plus the appropriate level of experience that
demonstrates the required skills and capabilities. You should have demonstrated expertise in java programming, databases, XML, and have a strong understanding of modern web technologies. You will be disciplined, but creative and innovative, and motivated by the creation of transformative research technology. A flair for user interface design and visualization techniques would be prove advantageous.

A Research Fellow will be appointed at the appropriate point of Grade 6-7 scale (£29,853 – £36,715 per annum), and a Research Assistant will be appointed at the appropriate point of the Grade 5 scale (£25,001 – £28,139 per annum).

PLURAL + Festival for Youth with $ 1,000 USD Award in New York City

PLURAL + festival is a platform for young people to express themselves on key migration and diversity issues and reinforced the belief that youth are powerful and creative agents of social change in the world.

Young people – 9 to 25 years of age – across the world are invited to free contest by submitting short videos of between one to five minutes in length and share their thoughts, experiences, opinions, questions and suggestions about migration, integration, inclusiveness, identity, the human rights of migrant and related issues; highlighting their realities as well as presenting their ideas on how to develop peaceful coexistence in diverse cultural and religious contexts.

The aim of PLURAL + is to ensure youth involvement on migration and diversity issues not just at community level, but also globally by facilitating the voice of youth to be heard around the world through a variety of media platforms and distribution (broadcast, video festivals, etc.).

Award
The PLURAL+ JURY AWARD prizes will be awarded in three (3) age-based categories:
* 9 to 12 years old
* 13 to 17 years old
* 18 to 25 years old

The PLURAL+ International Jury will select three videos (one for each age group). These awardees will receive $ 1,000 USD each as well as, when possible, an invitation (travel and accommodations expenses paid) to attend the November 12th, 2010 PLURAL + Awards Ceremony in New York City.

The International Women’s Media Foundation Fellowship in Massachusetts

The International Women’s Media Foundation is now accepting applications for the 2010-11 Elizabeth Neuffer Fellowship, which is open to women journalists focusing on human rights and social justice. Recipients spend nine months in a tailor-made academic research program at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge, Massachusetts. During that time, Neuffer fellows may also work with the Boston Globe or The New York Times.

Eligibility
The Elizabeth Neuffer Fellowship is open to women journalists worldwide whose work focuses on human rights and social justice. Applicants must have a minimum of three years of experience in journalism. Non-native English speakers must also have excellent written and verbal English skills.

Fellowship
- a fixed stipend will be provided to cover housing, meals and ground transportation during the fellowship
- round-trip economy airfare will be covered from the fellow’s home country or city to Washington, D.C., and from Washington, D.C., to the fellowship city
- the fellow will also receive health insurance during the program
- for fellows from outside of the United States, the fellowship also covers the costs of applying for and obtaining a U.S. visa

The fellowship does not provide salary or honoraria.

MSc Programme Scholarships at The University of Manchester

The Discipline of Social Statistics and the Centre for Census and Survey Research at the University of Manchester offer an MSc programme in Social Research Methods and Statistics. The programme provides a firm grounding in advanced quantitative methods, taught within an applied social science framework. The programme is designed to be accessible to non-statisticians yet more focussed than most of the existing Masters courses in social research methods. The MSc course offers relevant and marketable skills for a career in research and is recognised for PhD training by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC). Modules are taught with an emphasis on hands-on training in the application of methods and software. The programme is available full-time over one year or part-time over two years.

Scholarships that will cover the fees of up to three excellent full time (Home/EU) students or of one excellent full time overseas student are currently available. In the case of exceptional applicants, in addition to the fees, and subject to funds being available, we will consider offering a bursary towards living expenses. The fees for full time Home/EU students are £3,500 and for full time overseas students £11,300.

Both Home/EU and overseas students are eligible for these scholarships. The scholarships will be awarded on the basis of academic excellence and potential, which will be judged based on academic qualifications and performance and prior experience in social research methods and/or statistics.

The deadline for applications is Wednesday 31st March.

The Summer Institute on Alcohol, Drugs and Addiction in Amsterdam

The Summer Institute on Alcohol, Drugs and Addiction is a two week summer programme, which focuses on the study of addiction across cultures and is taught by an international faculty team. The programme is developed in close cooperation with ZonMw, The Netherlands Organisation for Health Research and Development.

Background

Substance abuse and its accompanying health and social problems are considered major problems around the world with tragic consequences for individuals, families and countries.Addiction is not a new problem, but few countries have sufficient resources allocated to address it. Moreover the concept of addiction brings to the forefront social, medical and moral questions. The intertwined dynamics of health systems, economic considerations and moral (inter)national politics have a combined effect upon the prevention and treatment of addicts. Questions like these will be addressed in the Summer Institute on Addiction.

This two week Institute seeks to provide a multi disciplinary approach to the study of addiction. The course will focus on policy models, prevention, evidenced based treatment, and how they intersect. Bridging the gap between research and treatment practice and policy will also be highlighted throughout the course.There is a dire need for exchange of empirical knowledge and theoretical insights into evidence based treatment in the international sector. The Summer Institute seeks to provide a multidisciplinary approach to the study of addiction and to promote opportunities for international networking among participants.In this Summer Institute professionals, graduate, and postgraduate students will:

  • gain knowledge and insight in the different policy models
  • gain knowledge and insight in evidence based treatment strategies
  • will have been updated on the latest research developments in different disciplines
  • gain insight into theories and concepts as they have been developed in the field of addiction studies
  • gain insight into a multi disciplinary approach to various topics in the field of addiction studies
  • gain knowledge of and insight into the complexity of (social) problems associated with addiction treatment

Eligibility

The Institute welcomes individuals with a focused interest in addiction research and treatment, Master’s and PhD students, NGO staff working on addiction-related issues, professionals in human services, practitioners, advocates and participants in other International School programmes.

Preference will be given to students based on the following criteria:

  • graduate students enrolled
  • post-graduate students who embarked on a PhD trajectory
  • professionals who are working or want to work with the government, NGOs, or otherwise in a field related to the topic of the Summer Institute
  • policy makers

Students are accepted on the basis of:

  1. their previous qualifications
  2. their knowledge of English
  3. an essay on their motivation
  4. a letter of reference

The Admissions Committee will take into account the coherence, feasibility or relevance of the student’s career objectives and proposed programme of study, as well as excellence in prior academic accomplishment, especially in coursework and experience related to the Summer Institute.

Students can obtain 6 European Credits according to the European Credit (EC) System.

Tuition

The tuition fee for non-credit students is € 1300 and for credit students is € 1600. The tuition fee has to be paid in full before June 10, 2010.

The tuition fee does not include travel to and from Amsterdam or housing.

International Doctoral Program in Economics Grant at Sant’Anna School

Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies (thereafter, the “School”), together with the University of Strasbourg, announces for the Academic Year 2010-2011 a public competition for 4 positions supported by a grant to attend the International Doctoral Program in Economics. The School reserves the possibility of accepting up to a maximum of 2 further students without grant or other forms of financial support.

The aim of the program, in line with the standards of excellence pursued by the School, is to provide a training path oriented both at research activities and at professional careers in the private and public sectors, involving structured courses and supervised research yielding an original dissertation to be discussed in a public examination.
The program lasts three-years and is offered by an international faculty composed of both internal faculty of the School and of the University of Strasbourg and a large group of Visiting Scholars. The Program, offered jointly with the University of Strasbourg, is part of a European “Network of Excellence” – involving the Universities of Sussex, Aalborg, Manchester, Paris XIII, Oslo, and several others, supporting exchanges of research students and faculty.

Mobility Fund for Artists in Europe – Supporting Travel for European Projects (STEP)

Mobility is the life-blood of cultural cooperation. Artists and cultural workers need to move easily across borders to meet their international peers, exchange views, cooperate, and influence one another.
S.T.E.P. (Supporting Travel for European Projects) beyond supports mobility fund stimulates and supports cross-cultural creative projects in a wider Europe, enabling artists and cultural workers to collaborate, exchange, network and explore unfamiliar ground and different ways of working.

With each Eastward enlargement, the European Union acquires new borders and therefore new neighbouring states. The European Cultural Foundation wishes to strengthen cultural ties between those European countries that are not currently members of the EU and the present EU countries through supporting individual mobility in the setting-up phase of cultural and artistic initiatives.

Eligibility
The mobility fund is open to individual artists, cultural operators, cultural researchers and cultural writers (art critics and cultural journalists, etc) travelling to/from EU countries to/from the European Neighbourhood. The STEP beyond fund also supports travel to/from the South Caucasus as well as Turkey.

Grant
There is no specific maximum, but grantees get on average between €300 – €700.
